CES4-060401-1: Indexing an Exchange Server Source
The information in this technical note applies to:
Coveo Enterprise Search 4
This article describes the configuration that is required to index an Exchange Server source with Coveo Enterprise Search.
Coveo Enterprise Search can only index Exchange Server Items if it is:
a. Connected to the Exchange Server with Outlook 98, 2000, 2002 or 2003.
b. Connected through Extended MAPI (Messaging API).
Moreover, the application programming interface (API) must be installed on the same server as Coveo Enterprise Search is. The MAPI application cannot be installed alone; the required files are delivered only with Microsoft Outlook (in Corporate or Workgroup mode) and Microsoft Exchange Client, therefore it is imperative that one of these products be installed. Note that if you install Outlook after installing Coveo Enterprise Search, you must restart the computer before indexing any Exchange Server sources.
Prior to indexing Exchange items, you must configure a MAPI profile for the account that runs the service. This profile will authorize Coveo Enterprise Search to log on to a session with the messaging system and index Exchange Server items. To create a new profile:
1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. In the Control Panel window, select Mail.
4. In the Mail Setup window, click Show Profiles.
5. Click Add. The New Profile window appears.
6. Enter the name of the profile in the Profile Name text box. Use an existing Exchange Server account name.
Note: This profile must be created for the user who runs the Coveo Enterprise Search service (otherwise, the profile will not be available to Coveo Enterprise Search).

You must set Coveo Enterprise Search to operate on a MAPI profile to index the Exchange Server items. To configure the MAPI crawler:
1. Go to the MAPI Crawler page. How?
a. Click the Configuration tab.
b. Click the Crawlers page. The Web Crawler page appears.
c. Click the MAPI Crawler link in the left pane menu.
2. Select one of the detected profiles from the Profile name list; if the profile you need is not listed, select Custom.
3. If you selected Custom, type the custom profile name in Custom profile name box.
4. Specify the number of simultaneous downloads in the Threads box.
5. Click Apply Changes.
After all the preparatory steps have been performed, Exchange Server sources can be added to Coveo Enterprise Search. For example, a MAPI profile has access to the following folders:

To index the Inbox folder, use the following starting address:
mapi://Mailbox - John Smith/Inbox/
To index the folder All Public Folders, use the following starting address:
mapi://Public Folders/All Public Folders/
Archives can also be indexed with this address:
mapi://Archive Folders/
The Outlook address can also be used as the starting address. For example, the following is a valid address to index the folder All Public Folders:
outlook:\\Public Folders\All Public Folders
